Guan Eng to sue Utusan : DAP hina Islam ?? (report update 5.45pm)
from al-banjari online 2009 by albanjari
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has denied a report in Utusan Malaysia today that the state had established an inter-faith council last year.
"These are lies against me, DAP and also Islam. We have no such council and we don't even know where they got their source from," he told reporters in Parliament today.
The DAP secretary-general also added that he had instructed his lawyers to file a defamation suit against the Malay daily for carrying the untrue report and also wanted a public apology.
"And if they have any evidence of us setting-up such a council, then bring it to the court," he said, adding that he would also seek damages from the newspaper.
"I have lost my patience about this. They have been pushing me to the wall all this while," said Lim, who is also Bagan MP.
Utusan Malaysia today published a front-page lead stating that the DAP-run government in Penang was insulting Islam with the setting-up of the inter-faith council.
Smear campaign for by-elections
The daily quoted the Penang Islamic Council chief Shabudin Yahaya as saying that the inter-faith council must not be allowed to be established as it would place Islam on par with the other religions.
Shabudin, who is also an Umno state assemblyperson for Permatang Berangan, said the setting-up of the council was an insult to Islam. The daily said that the inter-faith council was headed by Lim and three Malay members as well.
Lim also described the report as a smear campaign tactic in the wake of the upcoming by-elections in Bukit Gantang, Perak and Bukit Selambau, Kedah on April 7.
"Such a report will become a tool to attack us in the future especially when the two by-elections are just around the corner," he said.
"I can stress now that such a council had never existed and if it did take place, I would know about it because it is my government (administration)," said Lim, adding that such "disgusting" reporting should never exist in Malaysia.
"Why would they come up with all these lies that we are an anti-Muslims and Malays?
How come they never highlighted the story when I was jailed under the Internal Security Act during Operasi Lallang in 1987 for defending a Malay family?" he added
Penang MPs to lodge police report
In a separate press conference, Penang Pakatan MPs have unanimously decided to lodge a police report on the "false news" in Dang Wangi police station today.
According to Jeff Ooi (DAP-Jelutong), they wanted the report to be classified as "seditious" and suggested it be put under the Penal Code.
No such council existed in Penang, he said.
Instead, he added, the state government since last year has put a lot of effort in strengthening relationships between the voters who come from various religious backgrounds.
He further urged all Pakatan assemblypersons in Penang to lodge police reports as well to show their protests against the Malay daily's front-paged report. This, Ooi said, would become the next strong tool in tackling the matter besides taking legal action against the newspaper as proposed by Lim earlier.
Pakatan's Yusmandi Yusoff (PKR-Balik Pulau) said that Shabudin should step down as Penang Islamic Council chief for "smearing Islam's image". "His allegation has promoted hatred and disharmony among the people...this is very un-Islamic and I am ashamed to be one of the Penang Muslim leaders (with him)," he said.
Deputy Chief Minister (II) Prof. P.Ramasamy (DAP-Batu Kawan) also lashed out against Utusan saying that "it was not even a different view, but it was an outright lie". Among those present were Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam), Liew Chin Tong (DAP-Bukit Bendera) and Tan Tee Beng (PKR-Nibong Tebal)
